Herzog’s use of music and bleak but gorgeous cinematography perfectly captures a feeling of desolation and loneliness in this remake of the classic silent horror film. I’d call it a “slow burn,” but the movie never really catches fire. It smolders throughout. Imagine embers dying on a cold night and you have a pretty good idea of how this movie feels. I really loved it.

Here’s a poem.

Rodents born as one
Thousands thrust in orgy
Quelled, each dies alone
